George RR Martin gives an update on Game of Thrones books and shows

A song of ice and fire creator George RR Martin has provided an update on the various books he is working on and the various spin-off shows in development.

George RR Martin became famous for writing the books that… Game of Thrones tv show was based on. He has also become infamous for not writing new episodes for A song of ice and fire† For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, other than that the writer has a lot on his plate, new installments of the franchise have been regularly delayed. The constant delays with his upcoming book, The winds of winter, have led many to believe that, given his age, he will die before the book comes out. But, as the man said, he has a lot on his plate.

In a recent post on this site, George RR Martin.com, the writer explained exactly what was going on at this point in his career. In particular, he noted that: The winds of winter was still being worked on and that he was and that he was also working on several other books in the franchise:

“Yes, of course I’m still working on THE WINDS OF WINTER. I’ve said a hundred times in a hundred locations that it’s just exhausting to repeat it endlessly. I’ve made a lot of progress on WINDS in 2020, and less in 2021… but “less” is not “none”.

The world of Westeros, the world of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE, is my number one priority, and will remain so until the story is told. But Westeros has grown bigger than THE WINDS OF WINTER, or even A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. Besides WINDS I also have to deliver the second part of Archmaester Gyldayn’s history, FIRE & BLOOD. (I’m thinking of calling that one BLOOD & FIRE, rather than just F&B, Vol 2). I’ve written a few hundred pages of it, but there’s still a long way to go. I need to write more of the Dunk & Egg novellas, tell the rest of their stories, especially since a television series about them is in development. Coming later this year is a lavish coffee table book, an illustrated, condensed version of FIRE & BLOOD, created with Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson (my partners on THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE), and my Fevre River art director, Raya Golden. And then another book, a Who’s Who in Westeros. And those are just the books.”

George RR Martin then broke out about what he knew about the different Game of Thrones spin-off shows, noting that he was deeply involved in their development, liked what he had seen from House of the Dragonand gave away a few details about other series currently in development:

“So far I am very excited. HOUSE OF THE DRAGON is packaged in London and is now in post production. What I have seen, I have loved. I can’t wait to see more. However, I am also excited about the other follow-up shows. I can’t wait to tell you all about it, but I’m not supposed to, so…

Well, maybe there are a few things I can tell you. Things HBO has previously announced, or hinted at, or…

We develop live action shows for HBO and animated shows for HBO Max. No, I can’t tell you how much. But my hope is that some of these shows will come on the air. Not all, no, it’s never all, but more than one. I sure hope so. Some of the ideas we are working on are very different in tone and approach than the previous ones, and that moves me. The world of Westeros (and Essos, etc.) is huge and there is room for many types of stories, across a wide variety of characters.

What can I tell you? Let’s see. Bruno Heller, the creator and showrunner of ROME, is writing his pilot script for the Corlys Velaryon series. It started out as NINE VOYAGES, but now we call it THE SEA SNAKE, because we wanted to avoid having two shows with songs in the title. The other TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, the Nymeria series. Amanda Segel, our showrunner, delivered a few drafts of that and we’re moving on. The third of the live action shows is the Dunk & Egg series, spearheaded by Steve Conrad. My team and I had great sessions with Steve and his team, and we really clicked. He is determined to make a faithful adaptation of the stories, which is exactly what I want; these characters and stories are very dear to me. The first season will be an adaptation of the first novella, ‘The Hedge Knight’. Contrary to what you may have read online, the show will not be called DUNK & EGG, which could be mistaken for a sitcom by viewers unfamiliar with the stories. We’re leaning towards A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS for the series title, although THE HEDGE KNIGHT also has its following.”

Here’s the synopsis for the first of the several prequel series, House of the Dragon
