Ian McDiarmid on possible return as Emperor Palpatine

Long time Star Wars actor Ian McDiarmid is candid about whether he will ever return to the franchise as Emperor Palpatine.

Ian McDiarmid first appeared as Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedl. He would reprise the role in the film Star Wars Prequel Trilogy and was a scene-stealer every moment he was in front of the camera in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith† Since then, the actor has reprised the role a number of times, including voicing him in Star Wars: Rebels animation series. He appeared one last time in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker where he made a surprise return as the film’s main antagonist. However, another appearance should not be off the table.

Since Disney acquired LucasFilm, much of the studio’s focus has been on the intervening period Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope† Iconic characters such as Darth Vader have already returned in these episodes, as has Obi-Wan Kenobi in the upcoming Disney Plus series. Hayden Christensen is also returning for the series, so there’s no telling who will be back. While not confirming that anything was in the works, Ian McDiarmid admitted that another return of Emperor Palpatine was possible.

Speaking to Metro, Ian McDiarmid spoke about the possibility of Emperor Palpatine making more appearances in the franchise:

“I think I have to accept that, thanks to my ungrateful granddaughter [Rey Skywalker]my destruction was finally final. [But] naturally [Darth] Dad is back in the new [Obi-Wan Kenobi] television series, so I suppose it’s not impossible that one day his mentor will be rediscovered in the shadows.”

Ian McDiarmid last appeared as Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker† Here’s the official synopsis of the movie:
