James Gunn on the Suicide Squad moment that inspired Peacemaker

James Gunn has opened up about what led him to the peacekeeper series and what moment in The Suicide Squad inspired it.

Both James Gunns The Suicide Squad and peacekeeper are arguably the best thing the DC Extended Universe has released to date. Combining over-the-top violence, laughable humor and real, recognizable human drama, both parts set a new high bar for what Warner Bros does in the universe next. Still, one of the biggest MVPs of both episodes is also one of the most despicable characters in the entire venture.

First introduced in The Suicide SquadJohn Cena’s Peacemaker was a character who stood out as despicable in a cast filled with almost nothing but despicable characters. Towards the end of the film, it is revealed that he is Amanda Waller’s backup plan and he kills Rick Flag and nearly kills Ratcatcher 2 to cover up Project Starfish. He is eventually shot by Bloodsport, but is revealed to be still alive during an end credits ending, leading to the events of the peacekeeper series. According to James Gunn, it was this moment that led to the creation of the series.

While talking to Vulture, James Gunn broke the moment he realized he was a… peacekeeper series, which traces it all back to when John Cena had a gun to the head of Ratcatcher 2:

“There’s a very specific moment between me and John that I can trace the origins of this show to. It’s the moment in The Suicide Squad where Peacemaker keeps his gun on Ratcatcher 2 [Cleo Cazo] and he is about to kill her. I went into this tight close-up of his eyes. On set, I’m always in the microphone and talking about everything while we’re filming. So I talk to John on the God Mic about what he’s feeling, and I see his eyes switch. I see him going to this incredibly sad, vulnerable place. We realize that this character is a guy who does something he doesn’t want to do at all, but he’s going to do it anyway, which is shoot a young girl.

Seeing that moment in him, I knew that John was not only an artist who was funny, so I hired him, but also a man with a different layer. That’s when I knew John had that thing. It’s something that many great actors don’t have, and most wrestlers who have become actors don’t. Dave Bautista has it too. That’s why I hired him for Guardians [of the Galaxy] in the first place. A big part of me wanting to do Peacemaker was to sculpt away all the other stuff, all the juggling and entertaining that John does, and focus on that vulnerable sector.
