Daniel Espinosa, director of morbiustalked about Jared Leto’s approach to the Marvel role.
morbius tells the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, played by Jared Leto, whose search for a cure for his debilitating blood disease eventually turns him into a “living vampire.” In the film, before developing his abilities, Morbius is shown to be heavily affected by his condition, staggering slowly on a pair of crutches to get around. According to director Daniel Espinosa, part of Leto’s method of getting into the character was Morbius’ limping and relying on crutches even between takes, which led to some problems when it came to bathroom breaks.
In a recent interview with Uproxx, Espinosa was asked about the rumor that Leto had used his crutches when the cameras weren’t rolling, leading to bathroom breaks being so long that a compromise was reached so someone would drive Leto to the bathroom. in a wheelchair. Espinosa confirmed the rumor and attributed it to the actor’s own lawsuit. He explained:
“Yeah. Because I think what Jared thinks, what Jared believes, is that somehow he needed the pain of those moves, even when he was playing the normal Michael Morbius, because he’s had this pain all his life “Even though, since he’s alive and strong, it must be a difference. Hey, man, it’s people’s processes.”
It is an approach that will certainly divide opinion. On the one hand, some will see it as a sign of Jared Leto’s dedication to portraying someone who has lived his entire life with a debilitating condition, while others will certainly think Leto’s pretending of disability is unnecessary or even problematic. Leto’s method acting has caused problems in the past; while playing the Joker in suicide squadthe actor infamously sent his co-stars disturbing gifts, including a used condom and a live mouse.
Given the lackluster response to morbius, there is certainly some doubt as to whether Jared Leto’s method really pays off here. But, as Espinosa further notes, “All actors believe in processes.”
