‘Morbius’ Tops Box Office as ‘The Batman’ Hits $700 Million Worldwide

In a weekend that has been exceptionally successful for bat-related cartoon characters, Sony’s morbius opened at #1 at the domestic box office. After nearly two years of delay, Jared Leto’s film made $39.1 million in its first three days. It also took in $44.9 million internationally, bringing the total worldwide to about $84 million. Meanwhile, in its fifth weekend, Warner Bros. pictures’ the batter ranked third, earning $10.8 million, bringing the US domestic total to approximately $349 million and the global total to $710.5 million worldwide.

It will be interesting to see how morbius continues to hit the box office, as it has received mostly negative reviews from critics and a mediocre reception from the public. This will be a real test of the public’s loyalty to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, as both Tom Hardy’s venom movies have been blockbusters and Sony still ranks high on the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. To be fair, Morbius isn’t as well known as a character among the public as Venom is, but Marvel is arguably the biggest draw for mainstream audiences to get to the theater, which is showcased by 2021’s success. Shang-Chi and Eternalsboth of which feature lesser-known characters, but have been given the benefit of the doubt from moviegoers who trust the Marvel Studios brand.

Regarding the batter, Expected to air on HBO Max later this month, audiences have clearly reacted quite well to Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s reboot of the Caped Crusader. With plenty of spin-off series in the works, including one about Colin Farrell’s Penguin, the franchise’s future looks bright, and you can expect the sequel to be an even bigger box-office success.
