New ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Movie Could Go Into Production This Summer

20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell says the new Planet of the Apes film could start production as early as summer.

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, now renamed 20th Century Studios, it brought with it a huge amount of intellectual property. In addition to the various Marvel film rights that the studio owned, it also owned the rights to the Alien and Planet of the Apes franchises. It soon became apparent that the studio had intent to continue both franchises.

With the Alien series, Legion and fargo creator Noah Hawley was brought in to develop a television series with a 2023 release date in mind. The next Planet of the Apes advance was placed under maze runner director Wes Ball who has been working on the project since late 2019. There has been little news from the franchise since then, but that could change in the foreseeable future.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Asbell, president of 20th Century Studios, gave an update on the film. In particular, he revealed that they were expecting a draft of the script soon and that they hoped to start production in late summer to early fall:

We expect a concept very soon, and it is Wes Ball attached to directing. We hope to go by late summer, early fall.
