‘Shazam 2’ Director Says DC Shuffle Changed Its ‘The Flash’ Retcon Plan

Last week, Warner Bros. fans pushing the release dates for some of their upcoming DC Extended Universe movies. Movies like Black Adam, The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were delayed, with the latter two being postponed to 2023, while Shazam! Anger of the Gods was pushed six months earlier for release just in time for Christmas at the end of the year.

Director David F. Sandberg responded with a series of tweets about the film’s earlier release date. including a playful, humorous commentary for Avatar 2 Director James Cameron† Now he also revealed that he had a plan to explain why the suits for the Shazam family are different designs when asked, and it turns out he would have referred to The flash and Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) messing with the DC Extended Universe timeline:

Fortunately, we have the appearance of the Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) to look forward to when it comes to this exciting new release. Given that we’ll be seeing the return of the Shazam family in more action-packed sequences, it’s also exciting to see the film coming out sooner than expected, and with that in mind, there’s no need to explain everything on based on what DC has planned with The Flash.

Here’s the synopsis for the first of the DC Shazam! movie:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a little magic to bring it out. In the case of Billy Batson (Angel), this 14-year-old foster child can, by shouting one word – SHAZAM! – turning into the adult superhero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an old wizard. Still a kid at heart – in a ripped, divine body – Shazam enjoys this grown-up version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with it! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning from his hands? Can he skip his social studies exam? Shazam pushes his limits with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he will have to master these powers quickly.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans and Djimon Hounsou.

The original movie is available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. In the meantime, Shazam! Anger of the Gods will hit theaters on December 16, 2022 while The flash will hit theaters on June 23, 2023.
