‘The Batman’ Director Says There’s No ‘Joker’ Crossover On The Table

the batter director Matt Reeves says a crossover with Joaquin Phoenix’s joker is not on the table.

the batter end of DC is quickly becoming one of the more intricate branches under the superhero umbrella. At the time of writing, at least three separate Batman properties appear to be being produced simultaneously. The first is in what’s been called the DC Extended Universe, with Michael Keaton taking over the role from Ben Affleck. The second is the Matt Reeves-directed movie starring Robert Pattinson, which has been made into at least two different HBO Max shows. Finally, we have the Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.

When joker was released in 2019 and received mixed reactions from critics, but managed to earn a number of Oscar nominations, with Joaquin Phoenix winning one for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The film was also the highest-grossing DC movie ever made, making over $1 billion worldwide on a $55 million budget. A sequel is currently in development and is set to begin production in 2023.

The movie itself had an interesting ending, which led directly to Bruce Wayne’s parents being shot. Some have speculated that this may have been intended to set up Robert Pattinson’s Batman and that there may be a crossover on the table. According to director Matt Reeves, this was not the plan and never was.

During a conversation with Total Film, the director talked about the possibilities of crossing the road the batter with Joaquin Phonix’s joker† The director noted that there was never a plan for this and that the two projects were being worked on completely independently of each other:

“Not really. I was finishing the Planet of the Apes movies when I first came on board, which is 2017. It took five years. When I was working on the script and getting into the script, it was Joker hadn’t come out yet, I didn’t know what Joker was or what it was going to be, and once we got really deep into the movie, I became aware of it, and the fact that they were grounding things in a way that was reminiscent of to things we were doing that wasn’t planned. Joker was always meant to be a very specific standalone that Joaquin [Phoenix]and Todd [Phillips] were doing. Crossover has never really been discussed. But it was interesting to see that we tried to substantiate our stories and the audience was excited about the fact that you could take Gotham and make it feel as much as our world. That was something I wanted to do from the start.”
