Look at the old Rose DeWitt Bukater voice, it’s been three long years – since the launch of the AirPods Pro in 2019, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the next version of Apple’s noise-cancelling earbuds. The world has been eagerly awaiting the next-gen version with all its improvements (or lack thereof) for several Apple days.
Well, that day has finally arrived as Apple has just announced the highly anticipated Apple AirPods Pro 2. And as expected, it has some shiny new features to boot.
These are the main features of the new AirPods Pro 2.
Prices and availability
When they launched in 2019, the AirPods Pro cost $249, which is certainly a lot. But if you’ve been looking for a price drop, you’ll have to look elsewhere, as the 2nd generation earbuds also cost $249. The earbuds are currently available for pre-order starting September 9.
If you’re looking to save a few bucks, the Sony WF-1000XM4 and Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro are slightly cheaper at $229, while the Bose QuietComfort earbuds are $199.
There were rumors that Apple was making the AirPods Pro 2 smaller and more like the unvoiced Beats Studio buttons. However, the AirPods Pro 2 are almost identical to their predecessors. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been changes. The stems have a few new controls thanks to the new Touch Controls. Instead of squeezing the little stalks to play, pause, and skip forward or back, you can now swipe your commands.
Hopefully you can adjust the controls in the Settings menu so you can adjust the volume. I don’t know about you, but I’m not much of a Siri person when I use an iPhone.
However, the charging case has undergone a small change that makes a big difference. The first is the addition of a small speaker on the bottom that will play a loud sound when Find My is activated, making it much easier to find the quirky case. Plus, there’s a new loop so you can attach a lanyard so they don’t get lost in the first place.
Out with the old in with the new. The H1 chip that gave the OG AirPods a serious boost has been retired in favor of the new H2 chip. The new processor provides improved audio quality through the new driver. In addition, there is support for spatial audio. Speaking of 3D audio, the new AirPods allow listeners to create a custom spatial audio profile.
The biggest compliment in Apple’s cap, however, is the active noise cancellation, as the company promises twice the performance. I’m curious how the AirPods Pro 2 will live up to the hype. I’m hoping for more power, of course, but I also hope the new ANC won’t introduce white noise through the noise-cancelling mics. I also hope we don’t have to worry about awkward pressure shifts.
The original AirPods Pro had 4.5 hours of battery life. Apple has extended the battery life to the much-needed six hours. Combined with the charging case, you get over 30 hours of battery life, making it one of the longest-lasting wireless earbuds on the market.
Unfortunately, the AirPods Pro 2 are still Lightning dependent. However, you can now charge the case alongside a MagSafe or Qi charger via an Apple Watch charger.
