Looking for an online service to design a logo? There are countless, but does DesignEvo give you everything you need? Let’s hit their ‘Create a Free Logo’ button to find out…
There is a ‘start from scratch’ button at the top right of the page that, as the name implies, allows you to build something from scratch. But most will choose the alternative: start with a template and DesignEvo has thousands to choose from.
Most of the interface is devoted to large thumbnails, with a sidebar broken down by category to help you narrow down your selection. There is also a search field, at the top of the sidebar.
One feature we really liked was the ‘similar’ feature which you can find by hovering over a thumbnail. Clicking that button will display other logos based on the attributes of the one you selected. There’s even the option to further narrow down the results by keyword, although you can only select one at a time. It would probably have been better to have the option to select several at once.
Once you’ve found the template you want, it’s time to change it.
The interface is pretty basic: the main preview area is on the right, with four menus on the left, where icons, fonts, shapes, and colors are located.
‘Icons’ is an extensive library of black and white designs that you can add to your logo. The same goes for ‘Shapes’. If you want to add another line of text, go to ‘Text’. You’ll get an extensive list of fonts to choose from, and if you’re looking for something a little more special, check out the ‘Art’ section for ready-made designs.
But the best part of the interface is how practical it is: any object added to your design can be manipulated directly from the main preview space.
The structure of your logo is based on a layered system: each object is placed on top of another. Select one, and as long as it doesn’t overlap another too much, the interface is smart enough to know which one you want to manipulate. When it’s selected, you can drag, rotate, and even resize it. As you do that, you’ll be provided with useful information such as size in pixels, and guides will appear to make sure the position stays aligned with the rest of your design (if you want to). There is also a menu that allows you to change the position of that object within the layer system so that you can easily place it in front of or behind another.
At the top left of the preview area you will find tools to edit the selected object. If it is an icon or a shape, you can access the colors (there is a palette to choose from, or click on the ‘+’ to get unlimited access to all possible color variations), you can flip the object vertically or horizontally, and change the opacity.
Text editing has all the basic features you would expect, such as changing the font, color, size, and style, but there is also a menu with more advanced options, such as changing the spacing between letters or the curve of the text.
Another feature we liked is the ability to change the overall size of the design. By default, the canvas is set to 500×500 pixels, but this can be changed at any time (the canvas is changed, not the elements in it – you’ll have to manually resize them if you want a larger design on a larger canvas).
However, keep in mind that only the 300×300 logo is free to download. There are also a few rules to that: transparent backgrounds are not allowed and you must credit DesignEvo via social media, your blog or website. We understand the value and importance of promotion, but find it a bit odd as we haven’t come across any other competing services with such a requirement.
If you’re so happy with your creation that you’re willing to pay for it, you have two options: Basic or Plus. Both allow you to create a logo up to 5000×5000 pixels in size, with a transparent background, which you can change and redownload if you want. The Plus version also includes vector files, a copy of the fonts used, and copyrights. These are one-time purchases of $25 and $50 respectively.
DesignEvo’s interface is clean and simple, giving you complete control over the design process of your logo. The direct manipulation from the main preview area is very effective and allows you to create something truly unique in a short time. As long as the ‘promotion’ lasts (which reduces the price by 50%), the value of the options paid is comparable to that of the competition.
