The iPhone 14 is still months away, but we already have some credible leaks regarding Apple’s next batch of flagship phones.
This one started for the iPhone 13 launched with some of the leaks and rumors about that phone spilling over to the iPhone 14. Of course, take these rumors with a grain of salt and apply a few extra shakes for a phone that won’t be released for several months. However, if we focus on the strongest sources, there is a fairly high degree of confidence that these rumors and leaks are true.
Aside from that introduction, here’s a look at everything we’ve gathered on the iPhone 14 so far, including the expected release date, pricing, design, specs and more.
iPhone 14 release date
The announcement of the iPhone 14 has not yet been whispered, because of course there would not be. But in this regard, Apple is a creature of habit and the middle weeks of September are almost indisputable when it launches. Excluding the iPhone 12Apple has kept to an announcement between September 7 and 12 every year that goes back to the iPhone 5 in 2013.
iPhone 14 price
The only solid rumor about the iPhone 14 pricing comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who predicts that the iPhone 14 includes the “lowest price ever” for a large iPhone† This is due to the introduction of an iPhone 14 Max, which he claims would be a 6.7-inch iPhone under $900. The iPhone mini’s demise has been widely projected, with the lineup of four phones moving to two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch phones.
If that turns out to be true, the rest of the lineup would likely hold steady with the iPhone 14 at $799 (the iPhone 14 Max at $899) and then the iPhone 14 Pro models at $999 and $1,099 respectively.
iPhone 14 design
While Apple is unlikely to give up on the basic iPhone 12 design, perhaps the iPhone 14’s biggest rumor comes from the oft-trustworthy analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who indicated in a research note (reported by MacRumors) that Apple can finally get rid of the notch with the iPhone 14.
This idea has received additional support as Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants showed off what he calls a “hole + pill” design for the front-facing camera. Although Ross indicates this would be limited to the Pro models.
We now think Apple will have a hole + pill design on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. The smaller hole won’t be invisible… The two-hole concept will be unique to Apple, like the notch, not similar to all of Huawei’s pill models… Let’s see those new renderings pic.twitter.com/Udt8cTKzPZJanuary 12, 2022
The biggest challenge is maintaining the security of Face ID with the reduced form factor. A Bloomberg report differs slightly on this point, claiming that Apple will only narrow the notch on the iPhone 14 further, but eliminating it completely is even further away.
Bloomberg added that an in-display fingerprint reader could be ready for the iPhone 14. There was significant support for this rumor, with Kuo predicting that an under-display fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 14 would be included in the same analyst note on the big iPhone. 14 prizes. More recently, a claim by iDrop News indicated that the fingerprint sensor below the display had been re-chopped from the design based on supply chain reports.
A series of renders released by Front Page Tech in September offered a potential look at the iPhone 14 with a centered hole punch camera and nearly recessed rear cameras as its two most notable features.
iPhone 14 Specifications
The biggest specification update to date regarding the iPhone 14 is about the A16 Bionic processor. Please note that the name may be in flux. Ignoring the name, the rumor suggests that the processor will move to a 4-nanometer process from the current 5nm process of the A14 Bionic and the A15 Bionic of the iPhone 13. That should lead to a bigger performance jump than we’ll see this year. , along with improved energy efficiency.
Some have predicted a move to 3nm this year, but the general consensus is that only the iPad will be ready for that leap and the iPhone won’t see it until 2023 or 2024.
However, if you’re considering the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Max, you should put away your A16 party hats, as Ming-Chi Kuo believes only the Pro models will get the new chip.
The other potentially important rumor is about improved battery life based on a smaller 6nm 5G radio and potentially larger battery. The iPhone 13 has already rectified the shortcomings in the iPhone 12’s battery life, so another step forward in the iPhone 14’s battery life could put it way ahead of the competition.
iPhone 14 cameras
The cameras have the potential to be one of the most significant year-over-year upgrades for the iPhone 14. Again, citing an investor comment from Ming-Chi Kuo, he believes the iPhone 14 Pro will use a 48MP primary wide-angle camera. While Apple has improved the quality of its 12MP sensors better than Google has, it hasn’t gotten past the outdated resolution.
That’s far from the only update, though; the Pro models could also introduce a periscope zoom, similar to what we see in Android flagships like the Galaxy S21 Ultra† This one is a bit thinner, though. Kuo called it likely in the past, and the most recent positive sign for it was a patent granted to Apple for a “folded camera” for small devices that was noticed by Apple. PatentlyApple† While this feels inevitable, the foldable camera may not be ready for the iPhone 14 yet.
Another camera rumor that seems to be on the road more and more is the addition of sensor-shift optical image stabilization to all four models. This technology dramatically improves image stabilization that improves videos and photos in low light. It was first introduced with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and while rumors have pointed to inclusion across the entire iPhone 13 lineup, most agree it will be limited to the Pro models this year.
iPhone 14 outlook
That’s the sum of what we have so far on the iPhone 14, while sticking to sources with a strong history related to Apple products.
While it’s far from a complete picture, there are some incredibly compelling updates. Particularly for those who were impressed with Apple’s computational photography, but felt left out of some of the camera hardware breakthroughs on the Android side.
We’ll be eagerly following for any additional leaks on the iPhone 14 as we’re about half a year away now.
